Rated openings: use the correct assembly row and code edition
Apply an actual IBC 2018 table row to an original door-schedule decision, then compare an independent ADA maneuvering-clearance check.

Identify the edition and assembly before searching
This original exercise explicitly uses IBC 2018, including published errata, without local amendments. The design establishes a 1-hour wall in the specific 'Other fire barriers' category of Table 716.1(2). It is not a shaft, stairway enclosure or corridor condition. The proposed door schedule lists a 20-minute fire door. Find the matching row in the official source and decide whether that scheduled rating meets it.
The stated row requires a minimum 3/4-hour door rating, equal to 45 minutes. A 20-minute door does not satisfy that row. Resolve the door schedule and related opening details together. Do not transfer the 45-minute result to a different assembly category without reading its own row and notes.
Test a separate accessibility interface
For an ordinary manual office door under ADA 2010, a front approach on the pull side offers 66 in perpendicular clearance but only 14 in beyond the latch side. Assume no hospital-room exception, recess or other obstruction. Table 404.2.4.1 requires 60 in and 18 in for this condition. Depth passes; the latch-side space is 4 in short.
Upgrading the fire rating does not fix maneuvering space. Increasing approach depth does not substitute for latch-side clearance. Clear opening width, hardware and all other requirements remain separate checks.
Write a useful reference record
This is an exam-learning example, not a statement that IBC 2018 is currently adopted everywhere or that it is current California law. A complete code review covers more than these two interfaces.
These are original instructional givens, separate from timed mocks. State assumptions before calculating and check the source edition required for your exam or project.
- Record the exact edition, section/table and assembly classification.
- Read the relevant row, notes, scope and exceptions.
- Compare the stated criterion with the schedule or detail evidence.
- Identify the affected drawings and specifications before revising them.
- Verify adoption and amendments separately for an actual project.
