How to coordinate construction documents for ARE 5.0 Project Development and Documentation (PDD)
Work through a drawing coordination decision: when a plan note, section, schedule, and specification must agree, which document should show the physical interface?

Start with the condition that must be built
Suppose a rated wall meets a stair head, a door frame, and a structural support. The decision is how to show the vertical interfaces and anchorage clearly enough for the team to coordinate them. A longer floor plan note cannot show every layer and change in height. A typical detail with no reference may not apply at this location.
Choose a referenced section at an appropriate scale to show the physical relationship. Then check the plan callout, wall type, door schedule, consultant information, and specification for agreement. The exact solution depends on the project conditions and the applicable requirements.
Use each document for its job
| Document | What it should establish | Coordination check |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | Location and reference to the relevant detail | The callout points to the correct condition. |
| Section or detail | Vertical layers, clearances, support, and transitions | Dimensions and assembly components can actually fit. |
| Schedule | Type, rating, material, and hardware or performance designation | The tags match the plan and detailed assembly. |
| Specification | Materials, products, execution, and quality requirements | The written requirements agree with the drawn condition. |
Practice the decision in four moves
- Identify what is unknown: location, physical geometry, required performance, or product and installation requirements.
- Select the document that can communicate the missing information directly.
- Trace references to every affected plan, section, schedule, specification, and consultant document.
- Reject additions that merely repeat text without resolving a physical or contractual conflict.
Try a fresh condition
A parapet detail shows a continuous air barrier, but the roof plan calls for a new overflow opening through that parapet. Before choosing a note or a product, identify where the opening occurs and which enlarged section must show the barrier transition. Then coordinate that section with roof drainage, wall assembly, and the specification. This exercise is original and is separate from the free ReasonSpan™ preview items.
