NRC versus SAA: check the acoustic metric the specification actually requires

Compute two absorption ratings from original frequency data and decide whether an NRC value can prove compliance with an SAA criterion.

Read the submitted test record

A fictional acoustic-panel report supplies the absorption coefficients below under a single stated test mounting. The project requires SAA of at least 0.65 for that mounting. The cover sheet highlights NRC of 0.65. Does that headline alone establish the specified result? These values are original exercise data, not measurements of a commercial product.

Compute each metric on its own basis

NRC uses the coefficients at 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz. Their average is (0.30 + 0.55 + 0.80 + 0.95)/4 = 0.65, which remains 0.65 when rounded to the nearest 0.05. SAA uses all twelve listed one-third-octave bands from 200 through 2,500 Hz; their sum is 7.70. The average is 7.70/12 = 0.64167, reported to the nearest 0.01 as 0.64.

The reported SAA is below the stipulated 0.65 minimum. A matching NRC does not demonstrate compliance with a different named rating. Request compliant evidence or an authorized specification decision rather than silently substituting one metric.

Keep absorption distinct from isolation

NRC and SAA describe sound absorption in the specified test conditions. They do not establish the sound transmission performance of an entire partition or the reverberation time of a furnished room. Compare the mounting, substrate and test method as well as the number.
