Candidate field guide · reviewed 23 September 2026

From experience to an exam appointment.

Build the evidence for your PMI application, complete qualifying training, and schedule only after PMI grants eligibility. These are separate milestones; exam practice alone is not the training requirement.

Start with eligibility
01 / Check eligibility

Education sets the experience threshold.

PMI counts non-overlapping months leading projects in a professional setting within the ten years before application. The education and experience paths below come from PMI’s July 2026 exam outline. Read the eligibility section at PMI ↗

60 monthsSecondary school credential

Five years of qualifying project leadership.

48 monthsAssociate or eligible vocational credential

Four years of qualifying project leadership.

36 monthsBachelor’s degree or higher

Three years of qualifying project leadership.

24 monthsPMI GAC accredited degree program

Two years of qualifying project leadership.

A job title alone does not establish eligibility. Describe your own leadership of temporary project work, with dates and outcomes. Routine operations and personal or degree projects should not be entered as qualifying experience. PMI’s application guidance ↗

02 / Complete training

Complete 35 hours of project management training.

PMI’s 2026 exam outline accepts self-paced on-demand training with an end-of-course assessment. It says books and practice exams alone do not satisfy the training requirement. An active CAPM certification can satisfy the training requirement through PMI’s credit pathway. See the training rules at PMI ↗

ReasonSpan’s 35-hour course is in development

At launch, the self-paced PMP course will provide 35 hours of structured project management instruction aligned with the 2026 exam outline. Concept lessons, guided project work, and an end-of-course assessment will lead to a completion certificate documenting each learner’s training. The current free preview does not award training hours. Enrollment and certificates will open once the complete course has been validated.

Keep a training record

For each qualifying course, retain the provider, course name, curriculum or learning objectives, completion dates, documented hours, and certificate or completion letter. PMI may request that proof if your application is audited.

Mind the December change

From 1 December 2026, PMI limits eligible live instructor-led PMP training to specified provider types. PMI’s page says self-paced courses may still come from any organization, subject to its quality and audit rules. Check PMI’s update ↗

03 / Prepare the experience entries

Write one verifiable record per project.

PMI asks applicants to list projects separately. Its guidance focuses on objective, dates, what you led, the people involved, activities, and the delivered value. Prepare the facts before opening the form. PMI on describing experience ↗

01Project identity

Name, organization, temporary objective, start and end month.

02Your role and decisions

What you personally planned, directed, coordinated, resolved, or controlled.

03Delivery and result

Scope, approach, stakeholders, handoff, outcome, and credible measures.

04Verifier

A supervisor or manager familiar with your actual contribution and dates.

ILLUSTRATIVE PROJECT RECORD

Municipal permit intake rollout

Objective and timeframe: Introduce a new intake workflow across three offices from March through August 2025.

My role: Led planning for the rollout, agreed acceptance measures with operations leads, sequenced training and software changes, monitored the adoption risk, and coordinated readiness reviews before handoff.

Result: The new workflow was accepted for operational use; the receiving team took ownership of response-time measures.

Count time once, even when projects overlap.

Example: Project A runs January–March; Project B runs February–May. Together they represent five distinct months of experience, not six. You may list both projects; do not count February and March twice.

Keep dated source records and confirm that a verifier can attest to the role and dates. PMI measures months, not the number of simultaneous projects. See PMI’s overlapping-month example ↗

Prepare a private, audit-ready project log.

  • Use one row per project with its start and end month, organization, objective, your role, outcomes, and a supervisor or manager who can verify your work.
  • Compare entries against records you are permitted to retain, such as a project assignment, a milestone decision, or an acceptance record. Align dates and avoid claiming authority you did not hold.
  • Keep confidential employer and client material out of ReasonSpan. Submit only what PMI requests through PMI’s own application or audit process, following your organization’s disclosure rules.
04–06 / Apply, resolve audit, book

Move through PMI’s gates in order.

PMI controls the application, audit, payment, and exam appointment. ReasonSpan cannot approve experience or reserve a seat. PMI Certification Handbook ↗

  1. 04

    Submit the application

Use your PMI account to enter education, completed training, and each qualifying project. Reconcile overlapping dates and keep the wording consistent with your verifier’s knowledge. Start at PMI ↗

  2. 05

    Complete an audit if selected

PMI may ask for a degree copy, supervisor or manager verification of listed experience, and certificates or letters for training hours. Follow the audit notice; PMI’s handbook allows 90 days to submit requested documents and pauses further steps until the audit is complete.

  3. 06

    Pay and schedule

After application approval and any audit, pay PMI’s exam fee. PMI then sends an eligibility notice and ID. Follow its scheduling link to choose a Pearson VUE test center or an available online-proctored appointment. Confirm the name matches your ID, check accommodations before booking, and save the appointment confirmation.

PMI says the eligibility window is one year, with up to three attempts. Check appointment availability and the handbook’s current rescheduling terms before you commit to a date. Read PMI’s scheduling policy ↗

Keep an audit-ready folder

Dates. Decisions. Evidence.

Collect degree evidence, project records and verifiers, and course completion records as you go. Use PMI’s live requirements when you submit; PMI alone decides whether an application and training satisfy its rules.
