What is the PE Architectural Engineering exam?
The PE Architectural Engineering exam is the NCEES professional engineering examination focused on building systems: electrical, mechanical, structural and project administration. Candidates may search for it as “PE Architectural” or “Architectural Engineering PE.” It is distinct from NCARB’s Architect Registration Examination.
The specification effective October 2026 uses 85 questions with 8.5 hours of examination time within a 9.5-hour appointment, including the tutorial and scheduled break. NCEES administers this exam as a single-day annual event. This guide supports preparation for 2027 using the specification currently published as effective beginning October 2026. Confirm the 2027 appointment date and assigned reference editions directly with NCEES before finalizing your plan.
Choose the resource for your next decision
| Your question | Useful next step |
|---|---|
| What does the exam cover? | Review the four-domain structure and official specification below. |
| What do the questions and explanations look like? | Try the free sampler or the four independent worked questions. |
| How should I use limited study time? | Choose priorities from a baseline, then schedule focused repair and fresh verification. |
| What would I receive with enrollment? | Review the current course content, price, access window and reference boundaries. |
Published exam topics and question ranges
Use these NCEES ranges to check study coverage across the four domains. They are ranges within an 85-question exam, not four fixed allocations to add together. The examination uses U.S. Customary System (USCS) units.
| Domain | Published question range |
|---|---|
| Electrical Systems | 23–35 |
| Mechanical Systems | 25–38 |
| Structural Systems | 15–23 |
| Project Administration | 7–11 |
Explore the illustrated Architectural Engineering ebook
See the building systems and the decision behind a calculation in PE Architectural: Illustrated Concepts and Engineering Decisions. Preview 13 selected pages from the 302-page book, including electrical supply, transformer, air-mixing and structural load-path applications. The ebook and the online program are separate resources.
See how one replacement affects multiple systems
An equipment replacement can satisfy its mechanical duty point while exceeding an electrical limit or blocking maintenance access. In the dedicated public coordination example, compare the supplied load schedule and service-clearance dimensions before recommending acceptance.
Use the overview to check the exam scope; use the worked guide to practice a complete technical decision. The next problem should change the evidence, rather than ask you to remember the same result.
How should you read the published PE Architectural pass rates?
The NCEES table last updated in January 2026 reports 60% passing among 89 first-time PE Architectural Engineering examinees and 31% among 16 repeat examinees. The repeat group is small, so its percentage is especially sensitive to a few results. These are historical group outcomes, not a forecast for a future exam or any candidate's individual likelihood of passing.
Use the figures as a reason to examine your own evidence, especially after an unsuccessful attempt. The four-domain baseline helps locate weaknesses; applied problems, reference drills, and distinct full-length forms can then check whether those decisions improve. The NCEES figures do not measure ReasonSpan™ effectiveness or imply a guaranteed result.
A coordinated building-systems examination
The specification effective October 2026 provides 85 questions. NCEES identifies four domains: Electrical Systems, Mechanical Systems, Structural Systems, and Project Administration.
The domains are listed separately, but many architectural engineering decisions cross their boundaries. A power distribution choice can affect mechanical equipment, emergency operation, space planning, structural support, and construction coordination. Preparation should therefore include both focused domain work and mixed-system decisions.
What the October 2026 materials actually establish
NCEES publishes an examination specification effective October 2026 and describes an 85-question, 9.5-hour appointment that includes the tutorial and optional scheduled break. Its PE Architectural page also confirms that the exam may include alternative item types as well as multiple-choice questions.
The 2026 NCEES practice exam is a separate product. NCEES says that practice exam includes 16 new questions; that statement does not describe the number of newly written questions on a live examination. Use the current specification and supplied-reference list to set study coverage, then use the official practice exam to rehearse item types and interface conventions.
What changes how you should prepare
| Exam condition | Preparation implication |
|---|---|
| 85 questions | Practice sustained decision-making, not only short topic quizzes. |
| Four content domains | Use a broad baseline before deciding where to spend limited study time. |
| Electronic handbook and specified standards | Practice search terms, applicability checks, and edition-specific navigation. |
| Computer-based administration | Rehearse pacing, flags, review, and the scheduled break under realistic constraints. |
A stronger preparation sequence
- Confirm the October 2026 specification and supplied-reference editions.
- Establish a baseline across all four domains before overcommitting to a favorite discipline.
- Classify misses by concept, model selection, reference navigation, units, or time pressure.
- Repair the smallest governing decision that caused the error.
- Verify the repair with a materially different, previously unseen problem.
- Finish with mixed-domain timed work and full-length simulation.
ReasonSpan™ coverage
The ReasonSpan™ program includes a protected 40-question baseline, 18 focused modules, 130 Decision Cards, 144 applied problems, electronic-reference drills, and two original 85-question mock exams. It is independently authored and does not reproduce NCEES questions or guarantee an examination result.
