ARE 5.0 Project Planning and Design (PPD)

ARE 5.0 PPD vs. PDD: What Changes in Your Study?

Compare Project Planning and Design with Project Development and Documentation using site, structural, enclosure and cost decisions.

Reviewed for the current ReasonSpan™ exam profile · Updated October 18, 2026

A shared subject can require a different decision

PPD emphasizes preliminary design alternatives. PDD emphasizes the integration and documentation of the developed design. Both require coordination. Use the requested decision and available evidence to choose the depth of your response; the division name alone does not make every question fit a rigid design-phase boundary.

Compare the task behind the topic

TopicPPD study taskPDD study task
StructureCompare framing systems against span, depth, program and cost constraints.Coordinate member sizes, connections and interfaces in the developed design.
EnclosureCompare wall assemblies against climate, performance and budget goals.Resolve continuity at openings, joints and other detailed interfaces.
Mechanical systemsSelect a system and reserve space for equipment and distribution.Coordinate component sizes, routing, clearances and documentation.
CodeTest the proposed configuration against governing requirements.Verify detailed compliance and coordinate the required information across documents.
CostEvaluate estimates and alternatives against the project design.Analyze estimates for consistency with the documented design.

Example: a long-span community room

For PPD practice, compare two framing concepts using the required clear span, available structural depth, services zone and preliminary cost. Reject a concept that cannot meet a mandatory constraint before weighing its advantages.

For PDD practice, carry the selected concept into a coordinated section. Check the structure, duct route, ceiling elevation and rated assembly at the same location, then identify which drawing or specification must communicate the resolution. These are original study examples, not official exam questions.

Should you take PPD or PDD first?

There is no universal best sequence. Compare fresh performance in preliminary system selection with performance in detailed coordination. If the same concept is weak in both, repair the underlying concept and then practice the distinct decision each division asks you to make.

ReasonSpan™ access for each division

PPD is in development with invited pilot access; paid enrollment is closed. Its public guides and worked questions are free to read. PDD is a separate program with its own content, preview and access terms. Review the relevant program page before choosing a preparation path.
